Ryan Gosling’s latest film may have him play The Fall Guy, but he’s a family man first and foremost.

The Crazy Stupid Love star has been going from success to success in recent years, from roles in La La Land to Barbie.

But the Canadian actor has opened up about how he selects his roles and what he takes into consideration.

The 43-year-old, currently on a press tour for The Fall Guy, got candid during an interview with The Wall Street Journal magazine.

Gosling, who shares two young daughters with Eva Mendes, says that he thinks about them when taking on jobs.

“This moment is what I feel like trying to read the room at home and feel like what is going to be best for all of us,” Gosling said.

“The decisions I make, I make them with Eva and we make them with our family in mind first.”

This mindset leads him to turn down ‘psychologically troubling’ parts: “I don’t really take roles that are going to put me in some kind of dark place.”

Gosling’s career has seen him take on some hard hitting roles previously.

After getting his start on The Mickey Mouse Club, he played a Jewish Neo-Nazi in The Believer and a drug addict teacher in Half Nelson.

But when it came time to appear in La La Land with Emma Stone, he changed his thinking around film parts.

He said: “I think La La Land was the first. It was just sort of like, ‘Oh, this will be fun for them, too, because even though they’re not coming to set, we’re practicing piano every day or we’re dancing or we’re singing.’

“Their interest in Barbie and their disinterest in Ken was an inspiration.

“I thought, they were already making little movies about their Barbies on the iPad when it happened, so the fact that I was going off to work to make one too, we just felt like we were aligned.”

In further proof that he’s doing well by his family, fans noticed that he was doing some promo for his wife.

Whilst being interviewed alongside his co-star Emily Blunt, Gosling wore a t-shirt that had ‘Desi, Mami, and the Never-Ending Worries’ written across this.

This is the name of the children’s book that Mendes has written, which is due to be released in September.
